Family members say a professional Yonkers baseball player who was shot in the head three weeks ago has been declared brain dead.

Police say Michael Nolan, 23, of Yonkers, was shot on Sept. 18 in the parking lot of the Burger King on Central Avenue, across from the Cross County Shopping Center. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where he was put into a medically induced coma. 

Nolan was a graduate of Saunders Trades and Technical High School, where he stood out as a baseball player and his younger brother still attends. He was drafted by the Oakland A's, but injuries limited his playing time. 

Over Twitter Thursday afternoon, Nolan's brother told News 12 that the minor-league ballplayer was brain dead.

"Completely devastated over the passing of former captain Mike Nolan," Saunders coach Anthony Nicodemo tweeted. "Proud to call him a friend. The world lost a great soul today."

Police say Nolan and a few friends were standing in the lot when a pale or yellow Honda pulled up on the service road. Someone inside the car opened fire on the group, striking Nolan in the head and the arm.

Yonkers police say that a case detective stationed at the hospital says that Nolan is still in critical condition and on life support.

Police Commissioner Charles Gardner says the shooting may have stemmed from a prior drag-racing incident earlier in the week. There is no word yet on whether Nolan was the intended target.

No suspects have been arrested in the shooting, but police say they are following a number of leads.
