As part of World Suicide Prevention Day on Monday, experts offered tips on how to talk to someone who may be going through a tough time.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Experts who spoke with News 12 say the best way to prevent suicide among friends and family is to clearly ask if they have considered committing suicide.
Experts say the goal is to show your loved one that there is hope, there are ways to cope with stress and that they're not alone.
The New York state Department of Health reported more than 1,600 suicides in 2014 and over 10,000 hospital visits because of attempted suicides -- a growth of over 1,000 in 20 years.
Experts are also concerned about veterans trying to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. More than 6,000 veterans nationwide committed suicide in 2015 -- 152  of them in New York. That's about one person every three days.
The Orange County Department of Mental Health says it hopes to see those numbers go down by getting people the help they need, either in person or over the phone using a 24-hour lifeline.
