East Ramapo school community concerned about keeping schools cool during hot weather

School districts have been letting out students early this week due to the heat, including East Rampo, but some parents there still have concerns.
On Monday, the East Ramapo school district announced shortened days on Tuesday and Wednesday for students in kindergarten through eighth grade because of the hot weather.
"I do thank the district for making accommodations for making half days for Tuesday and Wednesday but it still doesn't compensate for what took place yesterday," said Terry Rodriguez, public school community advocate who heard from students and families on Monday.
She said she heard about children feeling sick, complaining of headache and nausea.
She also said she got text messages from those in the school that showed temperature readings between 85 and 90's.
She added other concerns about high schoolers taking regents exam in a gym without air conditioning.
The district sent this letter to the community last week sharing heat health tips, as well as saying there would be fans, cooling areas, and if necessary, modified school schedules.
News 12 has learned Rockland's Department of Health visited two of the schools in the district on Tuesday and found no issues after they received a complaint on Monday.
The department notes the state oversees schools.
