The Putnam Valley school board has approved a new policy banning students from using personal electronic devices while in school.

The policy, which takes effect in October, is part of a statewide push for distraction-free classrooms.

Superintendent Jeremy Luft said the district met with parents, teachers and students before submitting the policy to the board.

Luft said the ban includes cellphones, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses and any device that connects to the internet.

Parents who need to contact their child can do so through email or the school.

Exceptions will be allowed but must be approved by the administration.
