A Westchester veterinarian is defying the sweltering heat to save the lives of cats.

For five years, Peter Soboroff, of Dobbs Ferry, has run a solo race to help abandoned elderly cats.

His most recent trek was in June, when he ran 30 miles in oppressive heat similar to Monday's conditions. He continues to train for his next race.

The money Soboroff raises goes directly to shelters like Paws Crossed in Elmsford. It's a no-kill shelter that relies on efforts like Soboroff’s to keep the animals healthy and safe.

“It will help get them spayed and neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed. Some need surgeries, and it gets them ready for their perfect homes,” says Jennifer Angelucci, of Paws Crossed.

Soboroff is only about $2,000 short of reaching his $30,000 goal.

While his recent run is finished, his GoFundMe will be available until mid-July.
