For the first time since 2011, White Plains will have a new mayor.
The mayoral position opened up after longtime Mayor Tom Roach announced his intention to not seek reelection for his current position and instead run for Westchester County clerk. Current County Clerk Tim Idoni is not running for another term.
Two Democrats are facing off to be the party's candidate for the job.
Current White Plains City Councilman Justin Brasch and former White Plains City Councilwoman Nadine Hunt-Robinson are now seeking to replace him.
"I would be the people's mayor," says Hunt-Robinson. "I will make sure to bring everybody together in our city so that we can continue the great things," says Brasch.
Hunt-Robinson served as a city councilwoman for 10 years.
She said if elected, she would protect against over development, improve public safety with the community Public Safety Board and create more affordable housing.
"The big issues are affordability. People want to be able to retire here and stay here. They want their children when they graduate, to be able to stay here," says Hunt-Robinson.
Brasch has been a city councilman for the last eight years.
He said if elected, his priorities are also more affordable housing, climate resiliency and more programs for youths and seniors. "We need to figure out how to keep people here, and, more importantly, the workforce housing for the people that do the work in our city," says Brasch.
Both candidates discussed one of the city's biggest redevelopment projects, the Galleria. "It's a long-term project, but we're going to try to do better to make sure the developer does better for the people in White Plains," says Brasch. "My vision is to make sure that it stays the heart of downtown," says Hunt-Robinson. Former city director of Information Services Lenny Lolis is the Republican candidate for mayor and will face off against the winner of this Democratic primary.
