State police arrested more than a dozen people for underage drinking in Cortlandt, but it was where and when the alleged act took place that floored the officers.
Police say 30 to 40 teens were barbequing at Sprout Brook Park in broad daylight Friday. They say the parks department contacted them with reports the teens may have been drinking. When officers arrived, they say they discovered tubs of beer in the bathroom. The officers determined 17 of the 16 to 19-year-olds were drinking.
Officers say they were surprised to find so many underage people drinking at a public place in the middle of the day. They say underage drinking, a problem in Westchester County for years, often occurs in remote, wooded areas and houses in which no adults are present.
The teens were issued summonses and could face fines. The accused are expected back in Town of Cortlandt court on April 20.
