Police are investigating after they say former New York State Police Capt. Tom Phelan stabbed his wife and then killed himself today.
Officials say that Phelan stabbed his wife in the neck and then killed himself at the couple's 26 Starhaven Ave. home in Middletown.
A friend of the family tells News 12 that the Phelans were going through an amicable separation and that Phelan had retired from the state police because of a stroke that he had suffered a few years ago.
The family friend says Phelan had become emotionally disturbed because of medical problems.
Neighbors say that Phelan had previously tried to commit suicide.
