Clergy members from across Westchester gathered Tuesday at the White Plains Presbyterian church to have their voices heard about raising the age of criminal responsibility.
The clergy members want lawmakers in Albany to raise the age a person can be tried as an adult from 16 to 18 years old. Advocates say they are not looking to give teens a slap on the wrist. They say teen offenders should be punished, but in a way that allows them to come back to the community.
Residents in White Plains had mixed reactions to the idea of raising the age. Some say it depends on the crime as to how the teen should be charged.
Advocates say they will keep fighting until the law is changed.
