Students at a New Rochelle elementary school will have to begin the year in a new building after a ceiling collapse.

The collapse of the second-floor ceiling at Daniel Webster Elementary School forced the 500 students to relocate for several months.

School district officials finalized a relocation plan on Tuesday, and selected the Holy Family Elementary School as the temporary site of the school.

The new school is located less than a mile away from Webster.

The school superintendent says in a statement that the ceiling was originally constructed in 1930, and that the weight of the ceiling, along with years of water damage, caused it to deteriorate.

Officials say they expect students to be back at Daniel Webster Elementary School by Jan 4.

They say the school schedule will not change, and that all students will continue to receive busing. In addition, any child who now lives 1 1/2 miles from the new location will also be eligible for bus service.
