A coast-to-coast campaign is aiming to raise awareness about laws that protect tow truck drivers and first responders on roadways.
The Spirit Ride tour made a pit stop in Pound Ridge on its tour Tuesday.
Sal's Service Center is one of nearly 300 tow truck companies participating in the campaign to encourage drivers to move over one lane or slow down when they see a tow truck on the side of the road.
Statistics show a tow truck driver dies on average every six days, and according to the National Safety Commission, 71 percent of Americans have never even heard of move over laws.
"They are needlessly being killed on the side of the road or injured because people can’t follow a simple law and either slow down or move over,” says Mike Devito, of Sal's Service Center.
And for that reason, a ceremonial casket is being carried across the country representing the lives lost on the roadways.
Last December, tow truck driver Salvatore Brescia, of Yonkers, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle as he loaded a disabled car onto his tow truck on Interstate 95. Anthony Mangano, the alleged driver who hit him, is accused of fleeing the scene. Mangano was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.
The Spirit Tour will pick up Wednesday in Congers. From there, tow truck drivers will carry the ceremonial casket to more than 200 cities over the next year.
