An environmental group gathered along the bank of the Hudson River Friday to commemorate the 46th annual Earth Day.
Groundwork Hudson Valley and the Beczak Environmental Education Center in Yonkers sponsored the 10th annual blessing of the river ceremony in the early morning.
Tony Moonhawk Langhorn, who is a Native American, performed a blessing. Participants lit white sage and used a special turkey feather to fan the smoke, which they say helps carry prayers up to God.
The group then threw clam shells and rocks into the water as a symbol of giving back to the river, according to organizers.
The first Earth Day was held back in 1970.
