On Friday, the City of Yonkers honored the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians whose roots trace back to the city, hundreds of years after being displaced.

As part of Native American Heritage Month, members of the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians attended the City's renaming of the Daylighting II Park to the Many Trails Park.

The tribe traces its roots back to the Hudson River Valley Region including Yonkers.

Their ancestral territory included lands along the Hudson River.

The tribe was later dispossessed of their land and came west.

"When our people had to leave here hundreds of years ago, you know, there was a sadness in their hearts, and I've always just wondered if they ever thought one day that we would be accepted back here," said Shawn Stevens with the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians.

Native American artist Al Wadzinki also unveiled a new permanent sculpture honoring the tribe.

The park is located on Mill Street.
