Officials in Tarrytown say they are addressing parking problems in the village by unveiling a new parking garage off of Main Street.

“A few more spots on the street makes it a little bit more helpful,” says James Shallo, a Tarrytown resident.

This new garage is located on the western side of South Washington Street and about one block away from Main Street. It is a paid parking facility that has 68 new spots. The garage will be open seven days a week for six hours at a time.

Village officials and local businesses believe this will be a game-changer for them.

“This will make a big difference and it’s easy to find,” says Bjorn Olsson, executive director of the Tarrytown Music Hall.

“I’ve watched these businesses struggle when they didn’t have parking,” says JoAnne Murray, president of Allan Block Insurance in Tarrytown.

Even though the garage is now open, village officials don’t want people to park there during the Halloween Parade and festivities on Oct. 26.

“We’re going to be using this parking garage to absorb the local traffic. Surrounding here are a lot of businesses but also residents,” says Tarrytown Mayor Karen Brown.

Officials are expecting thousands to come to the parade. They are encouraging people to take the train to Tarrytown.

“Even if they come in early and park here, they’re not going to get out,” says Murray.

Tarrytown residents and visitors, who have traveled from as far as Texas, are now getting ready.

“We rented a car and got a little bit nervous so we wanted to walk around a bit before the event so we could figure out where to park,” says Hillary Ross, a visitor from Texas.
