A meeting that was supposed to be about road safety improvements in the Town of Greenburgh was inundated with outraged residents who didn't hold back expressing their emotions after the death of a former town employee.

Stephanie Kavourias, of Hartsdale, was the former manager of the Hartsdale Parking Authority and a former member of the Greenburgh Planning Board. She was killed over the weekend in a hit-and-run while walking on East Hartsdale Avenue.

The Town Board acknowledged in the meeting that road safety has been of concern for years and there are projects, both finished and new, that are addressing it.

Some in attendance wanted to hear about shorter-term solutions.

“The traffic survey…doesn't address simple, immediate measures that can be done very quickly,” said one resident.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said he was “trying to be responsive” during the meeting, which was not supposed to have a public comment session.

Police say the driver of the car left the scene. They later arrested 42-year-old Antonio Robles Sanchez in connection to the hit-and-run. He is facing multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs and driving while intoxicated.

The board suggested a meeting next week to hear people's concerns. It said that it's not set up at this time to make the changes people need. Until that meeting, police say they are bringing in digital speed signs and doing extra patrols near where Kavourias was hit.
