Yorktown police confirmed that a man was killed in an excavator accident Friday afternoon.
They said it happened around 2:30 p.m. when three workers with a landscaping service were removing trees in the backyard of a home off Baptist Church Road west of the Taconic Parkway.
Police said one person was operating the excavator while another was just next to it. Then, the excavator tipped over and pinned the worker who was just next to it against a stone wall.
The worker was pronounced dead on scene.
Police couldn't go into much detail about it, only to describe the scene as gruesome.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the agency that investigates workplace accidents, was at the scene.
Yorktown police and Westchester County police are leading the investigation.
"We believe it was an accident. But we treat it as a crime scene and work back from there. They mapped the entire scene. We called OAHA. OSHA came out and took some measurements as well," said Yorktown Police Department Lt. James Graham.
Police did not release the victim's identity or the contractor he worked for until his family is notified.
