Yonkers schools will receive $25 million to fill a budget gap, avoiding program cuts and layoffs, announced Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

It was welcome news in Yonkers. "I was really concerned for the children, about the things they would not have," said Michael Yazurlo, the superintendent of Yonkers schools. "They'll have at least what they had this year." Still, Yazurlo admitted that what students had this year wasn't much.

Students could have lost art and music classes, sports and other services. Yonkers will have the money to begin the new school year.

While the school budget crisis is over for now, many parents and educators said Yonkers needs to come up with a better solution for its recurrent budget woes. The school district must now devise a plan to show how it will maintain its school as part of the bailout.

"We must do better," said Yonkers parent Jose Montas. "At some point, the state will not continue to baby-sit the city of Yonkers, and we're going to have a catastrophe."
