Yonkers residents upset over Confederate flag found at carnival on Chicken Island

Some Yonkers residents say they are outraged after a Confederate flag was found at a carnival that just set up shop on Chicken Island.

The flag was hung by a carnival employee - attached to his assigned trailer door, which he kept open for anyone passing by to see. The man told News 12 he is from Florida and the flag represents his heritage.

A carnival spokesman says the employee's action does not represent the fair, and adds that minorities make up 65 percent of the employees there.

The man was told to remove the flag, and he replaced it with a "Don’t Tread On Me” flag, which is often associated with political movements such as the American Tea Party.

The Confederate flag sighting has been seen and shared on social media. While some say the flag is a part of American history, others say it's a bad representation of the community.

"I'm not coming to this carnival, not me,” said one resident.

A spokesperson for Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says the city's parking authority asked the man to remove the flag and he complied. The spokesperson added that the city does not tolerate any form of racism.
