A Yonkers resident says her neighborhood has been infested with rats and mice for over a month.
“I've never seen rats that big,” says Marisa Barrasso-Gerri, who lives near Marco and Kingston avenues.
Barrasso-Gerri tells News 12 that she hasn’t had this problem in the 40 years that she’s lived in the area.
Barrasso-Gerri and several of her neighbors say they have hired exterminators, but the rodents have found ways to avoid the traps they set.
While Barrasso-Gerri says she has called the city and placed a work order to have the rodents poisoned, she tells News 12 that it has been over two weeks and still no one has shown up.
"I'm angry,” she says, “because we pay taxes for what?” She went on to say that she had to replace doors in her home because rats chewed their way through them.
Some residents say they believe the recent surge of rats and mice in the neighborhood may be caused by work being done by Con Edison on the sewers.
News 12 has reached out to a spokesperson for Con Edison for comment and was told he was unable to collect information on the issue over the weekend but will address it Monday.
News 12 also contacted the Yonkers mayor’s office but did not receive a response.
