Yonkers police rescued a dog that appeared to be abandoned in Sullivan Oval Park.
Officers found the pit bull mix tied to a tree and believed he was outside all night.
The dog was brought to the Yonkers Animal Shelter where he got plenty of treats and a new name, Sandy.
He appears to be healthy and is very friendly.
The city of Yonkers Parks Commissioner Steve Sansone is reminding residents that a pet is a major commitment.
"When you have a pet, it is a lot of responsibility. It's not just a toy that you dispose of, it's part of your family. It's very important that you take good care, there are consequences obviously if you are mistreating a dog,” he says.
Sansone says they receive 20 to 30 abandoned pets per month.
Sandy does not have a chip and if he's not claimed by Sunday, he will go up for adoption.
