Police in Yonkers are stepping up patrols in the city's southwest area after a separate shooting and stabbing this past weekend.
Officials say two men were involved in a confrontation early Sunday morning after a block party at 173 North Broadway. One man was shot in the leg and has since been released from Saint Joseph's Medical Center.
A few hours later, police say two men chased another man down Nepperhan Avenue and allegedly stabbed him. That victim was also taken to Saint Joseph's.
Residents living in the area say an increased police presence could help curb the violence. Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner says the department deploys "resources based on changing crime conditions."
Gardner also says that in addition to more patrols, a mobile command center is set up on Park Hill Avenue and New Main Street.
Despite the recent spike in violence, Gardner says the city's violent crime rate is actually down compared to last year. Last June, there were 87 violent crimes reported, compared to 67 this year.
