The City of Yonkers is cracking down on double parking by increasing fees and more enforcement.
Residents told News 12 the double parking throughout the city is frustrating, and it poses a safety issue.
“It’s crazy. They block people in. You’ve got people honking horns at all times,” says Yonkers resident Frank Borrero.
Yonkers City Council majority leader John Rubbo says the City Council just increased the fees from $90 to $150.
It would go into effect as soon as the mayor signs the legislation, which Rubbo says could be next week.
He says they plan to enforce this, in part, through new technology such as handheld devices that can scan registration and quickly print a ticket.
Rubbo added that Yonkers Police Department's 2nd Precinct issued 100 additional tickets in this area for double parking in May.
"At times, people will be double parking, and we have emergency vehicles trying to get by or school buses that are trying to get by," says Rubbo.
News 12 saw dozens of double-parked vehicles in the area of Yonkers and Belmont avenues and McLean and Kimball avenues. Some of the people News 12 talked to that were double-parked say they didn’t know that enforcement will be stricter.
“I’m picking up an order from a restaurant so I have no where to park in this area so that’s why I double parked but I will probably never do it again” says Bronx resident Amie Marong.
“My husband is just running into the bakery to pick something up so I was like it’s just a few seconds,” says Amanda Granitto, a Yonkers resident. “It is wrong so I guess if I were to get caught, then I got caught but no one’s ever happy to have to pay more money.”
