Workers in White Plains said they're upset that construction on Church Street is hurting their businesses.
Paul Chillemi has run Chillemi Shoe Repair Shop on Church Street for years.
Lately, he said his business has taken a hit since construction crews moved in on the street.
"I think about two months ago, it started," Chillemi said.
Chillemi said he heard that the construction is for new apartments or condos and that the work is expected to take about a year.
Not only is the work loud, Chillemi said it's also driving business away.
"They took five parking spaces away, plus the handicap space away, so customers who have handicap can't come to see me or the doctors in the building," Chillemi said.
Kenny Kaufman, an employee at a print shop next door, said he supports new development, but said it's coming at a cost to his business, too.
"This block needs to be observed for safety," Kaufman said. "It would be great if our customers can get a get-out-jail-free-card if they are double parked for two or three minutes."
City officials said they conducted an extensive review of the site and the number of parking spots that are available.
However, Chillemi said he's losing customers and cash under the current conditions.
"We're not doing like we used to, that I know," Chillemi said.
