A Yonkers father?s personal tragedy helped him push for a law, which the governor signed Sunday, to better protect New York children.
Darryl Gibbs? 8-month-old daughter Cynthia died after her babysitter, 47-year-old Barbara Barron, violently shook her in 2000. Cynthia?s Law makes it a crime to seriously injure a child under five by shaking, slamming or throwing them. Gibbs and other family members say the signing ceremony was emotional and has given them a sense of accomplishment and closure. Senator Nick Spano (R-Westchester) worked with Gibbs for the past six years to get the law passed.
Gibbs plans to lobby to get the law passed on the federal level.
