With a nor'easter expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds and possible flooding to the region, some residents picked up sandbags from city workers on Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers Thursday.

Crews say sandbags should be used to line basement doors, garage doors, driveways and other flood-prone locations. Officials say residents should use one 30-pound sandbag per foot of space they need to cover. The city gives out sandbags for free at 610 Nepperhan Ave.

For large parts of the state that lie within the storm's path, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has opened state emergency centers and asked New Yorkers to avoid unnecessary travel.

Residents also stocked up on supplies ahead of the foul weather.

"We are getting some medicine because my family is a little under the weather," says Carmello Rodrigues, a Yonkers resident. "And you know, groceries, milk and bread."
