An SUV plunged into the Saw Mill River Monday after a driver lost control of the vehicle.
Police say the afternoon rain caused 22-year-old Gwenasia Henderson to lose control of her SUV and hydroplane on the Saw Mill River Parkway near Executive Boulevard in Yonkers.
The car then plummeted into two feet of water from the swelled river.
Henderson's mother, Ronae, was shocked when she saw the pictures and video of her daughter's car in the water.
"When I saw it, I couldn't believe it. I just cried. I was just so grateful that she's alive and, you know, it could have been so much worse," she said.
Authorities say off-duty NYPD officer Eric Karl, stopped and helped pull them to safety as the car was sinking.
The driver and passenger from Mount Vernon were shaken up but OK.
A tow company used a 75-foot metal chain to pull out the flooded vehicle.
