Police are searching for a man accused of robbing and sexually assaulting a 56-year-old woman in Riverdale, an attack that has left residents concerned about safety in the neighborhood.
According to the NYPD, the assault happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday near Broadway and West 262nd Street, close to the Yonkers border.
Investigators said the woman was walking in the area when a man approached her from behind, placed her in a chokehold, groped her and attempted to remove her clothing.
During the struggle, police said the suspect hit the woman in the face, stole her purse and ran away.
The woman suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention, according to police.
The attack comes just weeks after a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in the same area, heightening concerns among neighbors who say the location becomes isolated after dark.
Residents said they frequently walk through the neighborhood and worry they could become victims themselves. Others called for increased patrols or other measures to deter crime, saying they fear the attacks are becoming a pattern.
The area consists of residential buildings, a handful of businesses and a large grassy park. Neighbors said foot traffic drops significantly at night, leaving the area dark and largely deserted.
The NYPD has released surveillance images of the suspect and is asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls are confidential.
