Thousands are expected to watch the ball drop at the annual New Year's Eve celebration in White Plains.

This year, the ball is decked out with even more lights. Confetti will be flying as soon as the glittery ball drops to ring in the new year.

The city of White Plains is also celebrating its centennial. John Martin, president of the Common Council, says party favors will be handed to the first 2,000 people who show up in an effort to encourage revelers to come early.

White Plains officials say there will be no large bags permitted into the gated areas near Main Street. The event is a no-fly zone, so no drones are allowed. And there will be limited parking and street closures starting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in White Plains.

The festivities begin at 10 p.m.

Over in New York City, about 1 million people are expected to pack midtown. Thousands of officers are being assigned to the area, including heavily armed counterterrorism teams and bomb-sniffing dogs. Partygoers can also expect to be screened with hand-held metal detectors.

Revelers heading into the city by train need to know that Metro-North is banning alcohol on all trains. The ban starts New Year's Eve at noon and lasts until noon on New Year's Day. Metro-North officials are also urging commuters to buy tickets in advance.
