State Senate candidates discussed gun control during a forum Monday night at a New Rochelle church.
The evening was hosted by the Westchester Student Collation Against Gun Violence. Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer and former Rye Councilwoman Julie Killian, a Republican, answered questions from students on prohibiting armed teachers and extending background checks.
Both candidates are vying for the seat vacated by Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
"We wake up every morning and question if this will be the day we die," said Kelly Marx, a student at White Plains High School.
Parents attended the forum to show their support for the students.
"They feel it, and I think they also see their responsibility as citizens, as future voters," said Bonnie Baker. " We, all of us, have a chance to affect that here in New York state when it comes to who we elect here in that Senate seat."
The special state Senate election is scheduled for April 24.
