Westchester County officials met Tuesday to look at a master plan to get Rye Playland out of the red.
Lawmakers and Westchester County Parks Committee members are considering how the county-owned park can make more money while keeping patrons safe. An independent consultant compiled a long-term master plan. Committee members? chief concern was that safety not be jeopardized in the plan. In recent years, there have been incidents where children have died on rides. The park has come under intense scrutiny as well as being the target of lawsuits.
Westchester is the only municipality in the nation that actually owns and operates an amusement park. Lawmakers and committee members agreed that the park should not be privatized, so they can to preserve its historic nature.
One plan was to purchase all the rides at Playland. Currently, 18 rides are leased. If the county owned them it would be able to keep the profit that goes along with it. The plan also focuses on how to increase attendance at the park.
