A nonprofit held a celebration at Crawford Park in Rye to honor the 31st
anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Crawford Park and the Town of Rye have
taken strides to become more
accessible, including adding ramps and inclusive facilities.
The nonprofit’s executive director, Maria Samuels, is legally blind and
believes there is still more work to be done
to help the disabled community.
“We do have affordable housing in
Westchester County, but not enough attention is paid to accessibility…we need
to educate employers about the importance of giving people with disabilities a
chance with reasonable accommodations,” says Samuels.
The Westchester “Disabled on the Move” nonprofit owner believes the Americans with Disabilities
Act is one of the most important equal rights laws following the Civil Rights
Act.
