A Dutchess County school
district has joined several others in the Hudson Valley now in the process of
changing their Native American names and mascots, as required by the state.
The Webutuck Central School
District, nicknamed the Warriors, is doing away with their current logo.
Webutuck
officials announced that intermediate and high school
students have an opportunity to design their new Warriors logo.
Superintendent of Schools Ray Castellani says
the art department will submit three to five choices to the school board, and
the school district at-large will vote on it.
Penalties
for schools that don't comply include removal of school officers in addition to
loss of state aid.
If schools want to keep
their mascots, they must have expressed approval from a recognized Native
American tribe.
