There will be heightened security at Sunday’s New York City Marathon.

The race is still scheduled to go on despite the terror attack in lower Manhattan Tuesday that left eight people dead. Andy Kimerling operates the Westchester Road Runner Store in White Plains and is an officer in the organization's club. He ran in the New York City Marathon 10 times, but he's taking a break this year. Kimerling says hundreds of Westchester runners still plan to race Sunday despite Tuesday's terror attack.

"You can't ask for better protection. You'll probably be safer on the course than you'll be at anywhere else in the city,” he says

New York Road Runners, which organizes the New York City Marathon, released a statement that read in part, "New York Road Runners extends our deepest sympathies to the victims, their families, and all who have been affected by the tragedy in Lower Manhattan. We are monitoring the situation closely with our city, state, and federal agency partners, particularly the NYPD.”

Security procedures were also stepped up at the 2001 New York City Marathon, which was staged less than two months after the 9/11 terror attacks.
