A gas main break forced the evacuation of dozens of young children from an Orange County day care center.
Officials say about 75 children and 40 teachers were evacuated from the On My Way Daycare in Wallkill. Some of the children were rolled in their cribs to an emergency staging area at Crystal Run Healthcare.
Officials say a contractor hit a 4-inch gas main while working outside of the day care. They say there was a strong smell of natural gas with high readings, which prompted authorities to evacuate more than 100 people, including staff.
Everyone was safely taken out of the building and no injuries were reported.
Officials say Orange & Rockland Utilities shut off the gas service at the day care. Service was to be restored tonight.
