Water main break causes sinkhole, closes part of Central Park Avenue in Yonkers

A portion of Central Park Avenue in Yonkers will remain closed overnight after a water main break caused a sinkhole.
Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier said the heavy rain over the weekend did not cause the break. He said the city's water system is more than 120 years old and that pipes can rust or fail when under significant pressure.
Nearby residents still had water Tuesday afternoon, but officials said that service would eventually need to be shut off as repairs continue.
The southbound lanes of Central Park Avenue are closed to all traffic between Yonkers Avenue and Boone Street.
Officials expect the road to remain closed through Tuesday evening's rush hour and Wednesday morning's rush hour while crews determine whether the adjacent sewer line was damaged. The closure could last longer if damage is found.
Bee-Line Route 20 will also be detoured because of the closure.
Officials said southbound traffic at Central Park Avenue and Yonkers Avenue is being detoured along Yonkers Avenue, Saint John's Avenue and Wendover Avenue before returning to Central Park Avenue.
