Final goodbyes began Thursday for two NYPD officers from Long Island killed upstate in a car crash.
Wakes were held for NYPD Officer Michael Colangelo, of Huntington Station, and Detective John Martinez, of Hauppauge.
Both Colangelo and Martinez were in Ulster County Sunday for Colangelo's wedding.
Hours after the reception, police say the two officers, and a third man from Wantagh, took a rented Maserati out for a ride.
State police now say Colangelo was driving when they hit a tree in Shandaken. Both he and Martinez were partially ejected from the vehicle and died on impact.
Police say the two officers were not wearing seat belts, but the man in the back seat was and survived.
The wake for Martinez was held at the St. James Funeral Home in St. James. The wake for Colangelo was at the Beney Funeral Home in Syosset.
The funeral for Martinez will be Friday morning at St. Patrick's in Smithtown, and the funeral for Colangelo will be at St. Edward the Confessor Friday morning in Syosset.
