Westchester County still has a long way to go before residents will know the official results of state and
local races, and it could
take weeks.
More than
450,000 people cast their ballots, which surpasses
the 2016 election.
More than 250,000 of them
voted early and another 200,000 voted in-person on Election Day.
But now, the Westchester
County Board of Elections will turn its efforts toward
the nearly 100,000 absentee ballots.
It’s a process they're
saying could take a while. "We sent out 137,000 ballots, we received back 100,000 so there's
still about 37,000 that could come back," says Reginald Lafayette,
Westchester County Democratic Committee Chairman.
New
York election law allows for the county to begin tallying absentees on Friday,
but Westchester is waiting until Nov. 11, the day after the deadline to accept
mail-in ballots if they were postmarked by Election Day.
