Democrat Lakisha Collins-Bellamy declared victory in the race for Yonkers City Council president on Tuesday evening, despite being slightly behind her opponent as of 11:45 p.m.
Republican Ron Matten, who is currently ahead in the polls, says he will not concede.
Collins-Bellamy was the underdog in the June primary but defeated the incumbent, which elevated her campaign. She's focused on creating more affordable housing, bringing more funding to schools and creating local jobs.
Matten's platform centers on balancing the city's budget, keeping taxes low and funding first responders.
As for the three Yonkers City Council races, Democrats Corazon Pineda and John Rubbo appear to have coasted to reelection, while incumbent Republican Anthony Merante leads Democrat Tim Hodges 55% to 45% but didn't declare victory Tuesday night.
