The safety gate at a train crossing in Chappaqua was snapped Monday by a speeding driver, according to authorities.
New Castle police say the incident occurred at around 8:15 a.m. at the Metro-North tracks off Exit 33 of the Saw Mill River Parkway. They say a white van, which was traveling eastbound at Roaring Brook and Reader's Digest roads, was likely trying to beat an oncoming train during the morning rush.
Metro-North officials say it took about a half-hour to repair the gate. Traffic moving to and from the Saw Mill River Parkway was diverted.
The crossing is the same spot where a driver knocked down a guardrail to avoid an oncoming train earlier this month.
