The more contagious variant of COVID-19 first found in the United
Kingdom is officially in the U.S.
The first case was detected in Colorado, and the second
in California.
Officials say the new variant
is already in two states - the first case, a Colorado National Guardsman. The second, a 30-year-old man from San Diego.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci
says spread is imminent, but while this new strain is considered more contagious,
there's no evidence it's more deadly.
"I'm not surprised that you have a case, and likely more cases in
California and we [will] likely be seeing more reports from other
states,” says Dr. Fauci.
The New York State Department of Health continues to test to see if this new
strain is here at home.
So far, it's analyzed more than 4,300 specimens, and it has not been found.
As of Monday, the U.S. requires all travelers from Britain to test negative for
COVID-19 within three days of their flight. New York made the same decision,
but a week earlier. This follows 120 other countries who decided to ban travel from the UK altogether or
require travelers to get a test.
However, there is a bit of good news, doctors are optimistic the COVID-19
vaccines currently being administered are effective against the new variant.
