A tugboat captain suffered an apparent heart attack on the Hudson River Monday night.
Officials say the Tappan Zee Constructor boat Pilgrim was docking in Haverstraw just before 11 p.m. when Capt. Edward Smith, of Norwalk, Connecticut, went into heart failure. The tug ran aground and become stuck in the mud.
"He was pulling into the dock at a slow rate of speed, so we don't have any property damage from this accident," says Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco.
Another crew member performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. The 50-year-old Smith was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Rockland County officials say the investigation remains open until an autopsy report on Capt. Smith is completed.
Monday's incident marks the second tugboat tragedy on the Hudson River in less than a month. On March 12, the 84-foot tug named "The Specialist" crashed into a barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge and sank to the bottom of the river. Three crew members on board were killed in the accident.
