Trash trains still stinking up Manville neighborhood

Trains full of trash from New York City continue to foul the air in a Manville neighborhood. Homeowners hopeful the CSX trains would be gone for good two weeks ago, had their 4th of July barbecues ruined due to the stench.

Trash trains that have been fouling up a neighborhood in Manville continue to park for days at a time behind homes despite pleas to move out permanently. News 12 first reported on this issue two weeks ago. News 12 New Jersey went back to see how it’s going for homeowners.

Neighbors along Angle Avenue and South Weiss Street say the cycle of trash trains continues. Train cars full of trash from New York will sit near homes for five to six days at a time, leave for a few hours and then return.

The trains ruined several families for backyard barbecues on the Fourth of July. Several neighbors say the stench of garbage was too strong to stay outside. The Restrepo family and their guests had to dine inside.

"It was unbearable. We could not stay outdoors. We tried, we barbecued quickly and brought all the food inside and ate it in the dining room. It was embarrassing because they had not seen the house we wanted to show them around," said Maribel Restrepo.

Neighbors say they want a permanent end to the trains parking nearby.

CSX Transportation told us two weeks ago that that they want to be good neighbors, admitting some railcars stayed longer than intended. We asked this time and they offered a statement saying:

“Our team has taken additional measures this week to reduce how long cars remain at the yard, including using available capacity on passing trains to move them more quickly through the area. We are working with our teams and partners to further improve operations and reduce impacts on the community."

The response provides hope for these neighbors, however they’re looking for a permanent end to what some consider to be mobile landfills being parked next to their homes.
