A 26-year-old is accused of second-degree murder in the death of his 71-year-old mother.

Marian Green was found dead inside her home located at 43 Butler Road in Scarsdale early Tuesday morning, prompting a large police presence that stretched from Tuesday afternoon into the night.

Scarsdale Police Chief Steven DelBene says between July 5 and July 7, Chester Green stabbed and beat her multiple times with a sharp object and blunt instrument at their Fox Meadow home.

Yellow police tape remained around the home near the corner of Brewster Road as authorities continued gathering evidence.

Neighbors told News 12 they were surprised to see such a large police response in what they described as a typically quiet neighborhood.

Wednesday night coverage

The Scarsdale Village Mayor sent this statement: "Marian Green was a passionate and unwavering advocate for residents with disabilities, devoting well over a decade to the Village’s Council on People with Disabilities, including as its Chair, as well as earlier years chairing the C.H.I.L.D. committee supporting students with learning differences. Her passing is a loss for the many residents she advocated for. The Board of Trustees and I have long appreciated her thoughtful participation and her commitment to making Scarsdale more accessible and inclusive."

A spokesperson for the Scarsdale Village Advisory Council for People with Disabilities also issued a statement: "We are shocked and profoundly saddened by the sudden passing of our council chairperson and friend, Marian Green. She lived to serve and advocate throughout the village. This place we all call home is a better community because Marian chose to invest her skills and energy to make a difference in Scarsdale. She will forever be remembered as passionate, bright, kind, generous, creative and selfless. Our community has lost a unique gem with Marian’s passing. As her fellow Council on People with Disabilities committee members, we ask all who read this message to please pause for a moment today to remember Marian and her legacy of service."

Chester Green was taken into custody by the Scarsdale Police Department at the scene.

He was arraigned Wednesday afternoon at White Plains Hospital and remanded to the Westchester County Jail without bail. He will be back in Scarsdale Village Court on Aug. 5.
