A transformer exploded at the Indian Point nuclear facility, police said.
The Indian Point fire brigade responded, authorities said. At least one neighboring department was on standby.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited the site once the fire was contained with foam.
"This is a nuclear power plant -- it's nothing to be trifled with," Gov. Cuomo said.
The governor praised emergency protocols that he said first responders had prepared for.
