And we do want to continue our coverage and check in with Jade Nash who is in Chester in Westchester County, Jade uh over there in Westchester. What's it looking like by you? Hey, Jonathan and I up in Rockland. Yes. So we've moved over to Port Chester where it's a little different here. We're still experiencing some of the wind gust. My umbrella was flying around here. My hair is in my face, unfortunately, but yeah, rain is coming down. It is so frigid. However, I'm going to step to the side so my photographer can show you the parking lot that was standing in. Um Right now it's about 51 degrees where we're standing in the rain and wind aren't as bad as we had said it was in Mount Vernon. Um near the Bronx River Parkway. It is much easier to walk and talk and hold the umbrella. As my photographer is panning over to the parking lot, you can see some of the puddles that are forming. The wind is blowing, the puddles and the water to the cars here. Luckily many people are home, so it's not anything dangerous. We did see one person walk through with his umbrella. He's trying to hold it down here. Now, also something they want to bring your attention to some of the snow that's lining this parking lot. Um, obviously this snow is coming from this past weekend, snow and rain storm. Again. This is all evidence of the nonstop wild weather that this area has been hit with. I'm not going to pass it back to the studio. All right, Jade. Yeah, you bring up a very good point there. The ground is just so saturated right now that snow clearly not helping.

Hey Emily. Yeah, moments ago, the wind was blowing so hard that it was actually shaking the sign behind me. I'm not going to let my photographer pan over to the street where we're near Prospect Avenue to show you what we're looking like and experiencing here in Mount Vernon. Now, since we've been here, the rain has died down significantly since we last spoke to you, however, around six days and I actually let my um and because it was so difficult to hold on to. Yeah. Overall right now, we're on level of heavy rain here, mixed with strong gusts. Now coming up later, we'll share how Mount Vernon officials are standing by at this very second to take care of any flooding that may take place here in Mount Vernon. I'm not going to send it back to the studio.

Well, right now there is a rising risk of power disruptions across the Hudson Valley is heavy rain is moving in with those strong winds paired with it. But joining us now to kind of unpack some of the effects of this in the preparation is Mike Donovan from orange and Rockland utilities, Mike. Thank you so much for spending time with us here tonight. We want to talk about how prepared you feel about the cruise with this income impending weather. Well, we've been watching this since the weekend when we last mobilized for bad weather and we become increasingly concerned about what we've been seeing as a result. We've reached out to assemble some mutual aid assets to supplement our workforce in the field. Uh We'll be joined tonight by 100 and 30 extra mutual aid workers and that will double the size of all and R's overhead line workforce. So we're taking this very seriously and we're prepared. We'll be mobilizing about seven o'clock and it'll have company and contractor overhead line crews and treatment removal experts and customer service operators and the rest of the emergency response team at all. And R here. Yes. And we know a lot of people in the area are familiar with these kind of storms but for those who are those customers who are listening in right now, what advice would you give them for the height of the storm? Well, the best advice I heard tonight was from the meteorologist that is if you don't have to go outside, don't. Um, I just, I just came in from there and while it's not windy yet, it's, it's, it's very wet and it's slippery under foot. So stay home. Um, the other thing is if you do go outside and you see a downed wire, don't go near it, don't go near it. That the message prime there. You see a call at 1877434 4100. And depending on the situation, you may also consider calling your local police to divert the traffic from the down. All right, Mike. Thank you so much for your time. Really. Appreciate that. And welcome back to News 12 as we continue our storm watch coverage. Joining us now is Robert Sinclair from AAA as we keep an eye on the roads tonight and Robert, let's get right through this. How dangerous can roads be with melting snow. And now we're going to add two, possibly three inches of rain overnight. We're talking about very hazardous conditions and drivers have to realize that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions and you're a lot more likely to skid and lose control on slippery roads like we're seeing uh tonight. And so really keep your speed down. That's very important. Hopefully, if you got good windshield wipers on the vehicle, that's very important. So you can see, especially in the case of a heavy downpour, probably the most important device is to avoid driving standing water and especially at night and especially in unfamiliar territory. The CDC says you are most likely to drown, not at the beach but in your vehicle when you drive into hazardous flooding conditions and that happens. If you're in an unfamiliar territory, it might look like over topped the bridge and it only takes about two of moving water to sweep even the largest vehicle, a big SUV or pickup truck away. So please keep that in mind if you're on the road and avoid those conditions. Rhode, how do you know when it's safe? How do you know when you should turn around if that water is going to come up past probably the midpoint of your wheel? Uh, it's very important that you turn around. You get into your engine and uh water is not compressible, so it'll get into the pistons and it'll just ruin the engine and leave you stranded. Also, modern vehicles these days are festooned with electronics. Um So getting that water in there and if you're in a shore location that seawater is coming up to your vehicle, that can be very bad, especially in electric vehicles. I know after hurricane Ian in 2022 saltwater flooded a lot of electric vehicles. It shorted out the batteries created explosions, electrochemical fires that are very extinguished. And then of course, you've lost your vehicle. So please keep these things in mind if you're parked or if you're on the road, you don't want flooding to get into your modern vehicle. Julian and when you talk about flood prone areas, Mamaroneck near the top of the list, right news twelve's Nadia Galindo has the latest on how that town is preparing tonight. Nadia. Unfortunately, Mamaroneck residents know the pain flooding can cause all too well. This is a flood prone community with several projects underway to mitigate this chronic problem. Right now. We are here on Waverly Avenue right by the bridge which is a choke point on the Shell Drake River which often rises and floods this area. There is a project under way to replace the bridge and widen the waterway to help reduce flooding. Meanwhile, the Mamaroneck Highway Department spent the day clearing storm drains. They are on standby for flooding and town officials say there are also concerns about the wind. Luckily, Con Edison was in town, trimming trees and branches this morning, an effort to reduce power outages as the ground is saturated with recent rain. Long term, the town of Umar is embarking on several projects to reduce and prevent flooding. The goal is to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding. It's not going to go away. That's a reality and crews are expected to break ground on the Waverly Avenue bridge project later this week in Mamaroneck, Nadia Galino News 12.
