The Town of Hempstead is mobilized in anticipation of Debby, as it makes its way up the East Coast.
Heavy rain, flooding and strong winds are expected later this week.
Town officials are stressing that residents should prep Wednesday and bring any outdoor furniture and other items indoors. In case there is a power outage, have non-perishable food and water on hand.
Don Clavin, supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, said, “We are going to have flooding. We’re expecting trees coming down at some level, which of course, results in dangerous road conditions and power outages.”
At the Curtis E. Fisher West Marina in Point Lookout Wednesday, the town is securing boats and urging any boat owner to do the same.
Town officials say workers have been preparing all week by clearing storm drains, fueling response vehicles and prepping equipment.
At the town beaches, lifeguards have been warning beachgoers of the dangers of increased swell and rip currents.
Clavin said, “We expect high tide to be at 11:45 a.m. Friday. That will be the heart of when this storm hits this area and again that should give reason for pause for our friends down on the water.”
