A devastating two-car accident on Route 6 in Harriman State Park in Woodbury claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy Tuesday.
State police say the driver of a Subaru was heading westbound on Route 6 when he drifted off the road, over corrected and drove into a minivan that was heading eastbound. The collision tore the Subaru in half. Police say a mother and her two children, ages 2 and almost 1, were in back seat that was ripped from the vehicle. Investigators say both children were in child safety seats, but all three went flying into the woods. The 2-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say the mother, from New York City, is in critical condition at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. The father is in stable condition. The other child was not seriously hurt.
Police say two adults and a child in the minivan suffered minor injuries in the crash. The accident shut down Route 6 just before the evening rush. The investigation forced drivers to find an alternate route for hours as state police tried to piece it all together. Investigators are waiting to question the driver about why he originally drifted off the road.
