Some Mount Vernon residents are relieved to learn a ticking device found outside a Caribbean store Tuesday was not a bomb.
Police and the Westchester County Bomb Squad responded to the Caribbean Supermarket at 333 S. Fulton Ave. around 10:30 a.m. They found the package outside the store.
"The device was very suspicious looking," said Mount Vernon Police Department Commissioner David Chong. "It was a computer CPU with all kinds of wires sticking out of it and it was ticking. It was beeping very loudly."
Officials shut down streets and evacuated a nearby apartment building before using a water cannon to blast the hard drive. Responders said no explosives were discovered when they later opened the package.
Investigators said they have surveillance video of someone placing the computer hard drive at the scene. They plan to look for that person.
