A third suspect has been arrested in last year's beating death of the grandson of Malcolm X.
Malcolm Shabazz was fatally attacked in May of last year in Mexico. Authorities say he was robbed and beaten following a dispute over a bar tab. They say two waiters were arrested shortly after the murder, and yesterday the head waiter of the bar was also arrested.
The 28-year-old had a troubled childhood growing up in Yonkers. At the age of 12, he pleaded guilty to intentionally setting his grandmother's Yonkers apartment on fire. Betty Shabazz was critically injured and died three weeks later. He served 18 months in a juvenile detention facility for the crime. In 2002, Shabazz was sent to jail for an attempted robbery. At the age of 21, Shabazz was arrested again for punching his fist through a window at a Dunkin' Donuts on Bronx River Road.
At the time of his death, Shabazz was reportedly working on a book and attending the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He is survived by his mother, aunts and two daughters.
Shabazz was laid to rest at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
