Tenants of fire-damaged Yonkers building say belongings were stolen
More than a dozen Yonkers residents who were left homeless by a fire were met with more heartache Friday night.
Police believe the flames that broke out at 251 Warburton Ave. on Dec. 4 were electrical. No one was hurt, but 20 people were forced from their homes.
Tenants returned to the scene Friday to grab what they could, but some of what survived the fire appeared to be gone.
"It's the holidays, people (are) losing their stuff," says tenant Melanie Richardson. "People broke in, stole people's TVs ... it's not nice, it's uncalled for."
Neighbors filed police reports.
Meanwhile, tenants also returned to see the charred remains of rooms and items.
Yonkers' building commissioner says several permits have been issued for repairs. Before anyone can return home, the building will need to be inspected.
